Aboriginal Postpartum Contraception - Sydney Local Health District
Animated Explainer Video
Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) provides a wide range of public health services to the residents of the central and inner west of Sydney. The district engaged Punchy Studio to create a culturally sensitive animated video to address the communication challenge of postpartum family planning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. The brief was to educate new parents on the importance of birth spacing, specifically highlighting that pregnancy can occur as early as three weeks after birth. We produced a warm and engaging animated explainer video that uses relatable character designs and inclusive language to encourage families to “have a yarn” with their health workers. Our approach focused on providing practical health advice, such as the recommendation to allow the body at least 12 months to heal between pregnancies, while outlining various contraceptive options like the IUD and Implanon. The video is deployed in clinical settings and community health portals to support Aboriginal Health workers and midwives in their consultations with new mothers. By combining professional scripting, custom animation, and a friendly voiceover, we effectively destigmatised the conversation around postpartum contraception. Soft motion graphics reinforce the call to action, reminding viewers to include contraception in their birth plan to ensure the best possible start for their next bub.
