WA DEMIRS - Cashing Out Long Service Leave

Animated Explainer Video

The Western Australian Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) is the state government agency responsible for ensuring fair and safe workplaces. The department engaged Punchy Studio to create an animated video to address the communication challenge of explaining the legal requirements for cashing out long service leave entitlements under the WA Long Service Leave Act. The brief was to clarify that leave can only be cashed out once it has been fully accrued and that it must be paid at a rate no less than what the employee would have received if they had taken the leave. We produced a professional animated explainer video that uses a clear example involving a hypothetical employee to illustrate how written agreements should be prepared and signed by both parties. Our approach focused on compliance, highlighting that cashing out cannot occur in advance of accrual through incremental payments or lump sums. The video is deployed on the WA government website to help employers and employees verify coverage and understand their record keeping obligations. By combining professional scripting, custom animation, and an authoritative voiceover, we effectively translated complex industrial relations legislation into a simple and accessible guide. Clear motion graphics reinforce the call to action, directing viewers to the department’s website for more detailed information on long service leave entitlements.
