Our Water, Our Future - NSW DPIE

The Water Group within the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPIE) leads water policy and planning across regional and urban New South Wales. The team approached Punchy Digital Media to produce a two-minute animated explainer addressing a significant public-understanding gap: why diversifying water sources, including stormwater, recycled water, groundwater, and desalinated water, is critical for the state’s long-term water security in the face of population growth and climate extremes. The brief required messaging that worked equally well in regional and metropolitan contexts, avoided the metropolitan focus of existing utility-led material, and balanced the seriousness of the challenge with a constructive, solutions-focused tone. Punchy worked with the team to distil a dense draft script into a clear narrative, using visuals that “pop out” from base imagery to translate complex policy ideas into everyday-relatable concepts. The piece was produced with an Australian voiceover, toggleable subtitles, and supporting infographics and a 15-second teaser for social, all built to NSW Government brand guidelines. Services included scripting support, custom illustration, animation, motion graphics, voiceover, and static asset production.
