Wanding - ATSILS

Animated Explainer Video

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (ATSILS) came to Punchy to explain “wanding”, the practice of police using handheld metal detector scanners on members of the public, and what people’s rights are when it happens. The brief required culturally appropriate communication for First Nations communities, balancing legal accuracy with plain language and a calm, non-alarming tone. Punchy produced a character animation that walked viewers through what wanding is, when it can lawfully occur and what to do if approached, developed in close consultation with ATSILS to ensure cultural and legal accuracy. The video was deployed across ATSILS’ community education channels and social platforms to support legal awareness in First Nations communities. Services included scripting, character animation, illustration and voiceover.
