Education Services Australia - Decimals
Animated Explainer Video
Education Services Australia (ESA) is a national not-for-profit company owned by Australian education ministers. ESA engaged Punchy Studio to create another educational video for the Math Hub series, this time addressing the communication challenge of teaching decimal fractions and their practical applications in measurement. The brief was to explain how decimals allow for more accurate measurements than whole numbers alone, specifically exploring tenths and hundredths. We produced a clear and engaging animated explainer video that uses real-world examples, such as weighing fruit and measuring distances in a long jump competition, to illustrate mathematical concepts. Our approach focused on foundational literacy, explaining place value parts and the critical role of zero in decimal notation to prevent common misconceptions when comparing quantities. The video is deployed on the ESA Math Hub portal and used in classrooms to support students in visualising decimals on a number line. By combining professional scripting, custom animation, and an instructional voiceover, we effectively showed how decimal knowledge is essential for accurate measurement and comparison in everyday life. Detailed motion graphics reinforce the learning objectives by visually breaking down intervals into smaller decimal units and inviting students to test their knowledge through estimation and measurement activities.
