What is a family? (Animation) - AIFS

Animated Explainer Video

The Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) is a statutory agency that conducts research into the well being of Australian families. The institute engaged Punchy Studio to create an animated video to address the communication challenge of defining “family” in a contemporary Australian context. The brief was to present data from an AIFS study that challenges traditional definitions based solely on genetics or legal ties. We produced a thoughtful animated explainer video that highlights how 41% of respondents consider close friends to be family, while 52% include pets in their definition. Our approach focused on a diverse and inclusive narrative, emphasising that for many people, family is defined by unconditional support, personal choice, and love. The video is deployed on the AIFS website and used in social research presentations to foster a broader understanding of evolving social structures. By combining professional scripting, custom animation, and a gentle voiceover, we effectively messaged that families can take many forms and are unique to each individual. Warm motion graphics reinforce the final question, inviting viewers to reflect on what family means to them personally.
